Geocaching at Promised Land State Park

 
I  attended a Geocaching program at Promised State park.  Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeing treasures.  A cache is a box to store items; you can fill your cache with family-friendly objects. You can pinpoint the hidden treasure’s location by using  GPS technology.  The location is marked, coordinates are entered, information is saved folders are opened on the GPS.  Coordinates can be referred to as waypoints or points of interest. Always take extra batteries. The location and existence of the geocache can be shared online.  Anyone with a GPS can locate it.  It is fun to get outdoors to look for the hidden containers; people of all ages participate and the hunt can be as extensive or simplified as you wish.  After attending the introduction class with my family, we were aware that we need  refresher courses and practice with this activity.  It is fun to work in groups also and share your findings afterwards.  It is a great way to mix high-tech toys  with the love of the outdoors without getting lost!  This activity is enjoyed by scouts, students interested in science and environmental education organizations.  For more information go to www.geocaching.com.

Drumming Circle in the Poconos

 
Last summer we had the pleasure of attending a full moon drumming workshop at the Pocono Environmental Education Center which is in Dingmans Ferry.  The evening started with a potluck dinner at the center.  The drumming  was led by Maxwell Kofi Donkor, master drummer; there was an introductory drumming lesson and then we could expand our new drumming skills into the woods to play with others under the full moon.  There were people of all ages and we all had different levels of drumming experience. Different kinds of drums were used.  It was an experience of just letting go and letting the creative music flow through the evening skies.  Kofi has been performing for over thirty years and he directs the African Drum and Dance Ensemble “Sankofa,” which means “going back to roots.”  Kofi believes that we must find who we are by understanding where we come from. For him, the past plays a direct role in the future. He noticed how music merges with life. He conducts drumming workshop in the tri-state area.  As dusk approached, there was a fire made and that just magnified the tone of the harmonious evening. We took one of the hiking trails back to the parking lot of the Pocono Environmental Educational Center.  The center has programs throughout the year. Hiking Trail at Lake Wallenpaupack

Recently the new trail project  was completed at Lake Wallenpaupack. The majestic lake can be viewed by walking along the 2.1 mile path which is easy for people of all ages.  The path starts at the dike area near the Lake Wallenpaupack Information Center and you would continue to walk by the Wilsonville Campground where you can view campers enjoying their campfires, kids playing at the playground and beach area or boaters putting their boats in at the boat ramp. Continue walking along the path in back of the Wallenpaupack High School and past the Environmental Educational Center at PPL.  You can then continue down to view the pipeline of the dam. The trail is open year-round and there are plenty of shady spots.  It is a peaceful venture between you and nature.  Another nice place to hike is Shumans Point which is off of Route 590. This trail is approximately 3 miles long and it goes through the woods and you have some nice views of the big lake!  If you travel through the Dingmans Ferry area, there is a major project which will be completed anytime; this is the 32-mile-long trail called the McDade Trail that parallels the Delaware River. Currently there is one section of this trail that is 5 miles long and it is near the Shawnee area of Bushkill.  There is also a 2.7 mile segment that runs south along the river from the Milford Beach.  Porcupines, red foxes and many species of birds have been viewed along the trail. It is great for cross-country skiing in the winter too!  This fall take some time to get out and enjoy these trails and all the splendors that nature offers to us.

The low taxes, selection of real estate, good school districts and outdoor life with endless activities appealed to us. Nature programs such as the Pocono Environmental Center, PPL Education Center and Promised Land State Park provide enriching programs throughout the year to families and people who share the passion of learning more about the environment. Our aim was to provide a good education for our kids coupled with living in an area that radiates opportunties for social and emotional growth. Delaware Valley School District and Wallenpaupack School District encompass much of the Pike County area. As a realtor, I am able to see the wide selection of homes that are for sale in this area; different styles, sizes and people can choose to live in a community or out of one. We are currently living in a community with many amentities such as indoor/outdoor pools, lake use, fitness center, tennis courts, ice skating rink,Advanced Life Support, library and more. There are other activities and clubs that you can get involved in such as the landscaping club, art classes and dance classes to name a few. We have easy access to route 84 which takes you to NJ and NY. This is a necessity for the many commuters that work out of state. Other attractions in the area are ski resorts such as Shawnee and Ski Big Bear, waterfalls in Dingmans Ferry and Lake Wallenpaupack which is one of the largest lakes in PA. My friends and family love to come and visit and comment how we are on vacation always in this paradise of the Poconos.
